History / Details
Ballal Dhipi
- The Archaeological Survey of India excavated the mound, during 1982-1988.
- The complex covers nearly 13,000 m² with a 9-meter-tall hill called the Dhipi at the center.
- Floors made of lime and sand.
- The antiquities indicate the possibility of Buddhist affiliation and Vikramsila Vihar as per the structure.
- According to experts, in the 8th or 9th century, the Stupa (Vihar) may have served as a center of scholarship and pilgrimage until the 11th century.
- ASI has divided the site into two parts – the mound and the remains of a fort.
