A meeting was organized at Poramatala on Feb 17, 1907, chaired by Bhuvanmohan Vidyarthan, to establish a library to prevent the exodus of Sanskrit manuscripts from Nabadwip.
Roy Dwarkanath Bhattacharya Bahadur was the first president, and Debendranath Bagchi was the secretary.
Under royal patronage, the library was renamed the Nabadwip Edward VII Anglo-Sanskrit Library in 1910.
On June 27, 1914, with the financial help of Manindra Chandra Nandi, Haridas Shiromani’s toll house was purchased, and the library’s building was built.
In 1955, the library’s name was changed to নবদ্বীপ সাধারণ গ্রন্থাগার or Nabadwip Public Library.
